Commonwealth Championships - 6 Titles in Total
Even without stars Li Jiawei and Feng Tianwei, Singapore's paddlers repeated their record six-gold haul at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, the Men’s Doubles being the errant prize.

Top seeds, Gao Ning and Wang Yue Gu showed their class to win the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the 18th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in front of an appreciative Scottish crowd. The Men’s Singles event saw Gao Ning, the defending champion, clinch gold against India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta; whilst Wang Yue Gu succeeded in the counterpart Women's Singles competition. She beat national team compatriot, Yu Meng Yu, to clinch the top prize.

It was for Gao Ning a successful retention of the title he had won two years earlier in the Indian city of Jaipur, whilst for Wang Yue Gu it was one step higher; in 2007 she had lost in the final to Sun Bei Bei.

Wang Yue Gu attacking quickly from the backhand in trademark style. She won the first game in confident style, staying close to the table and forcing errors from Yu Meng Yu, as the eventual silver medallist tried to penetrate the blocking skills of the champion elect with aggressive attacking play. However, in the second game, the topspin play of Yu Meng Yu started to reap dividends as her strong strokes from both wings left both Wang Yue Gu and the crowd gasping for breath. She established a 10-5 lead and appeared to be on the path to establishing parity; from that point onwards, Wang Yue Gu was Miss Efficiency, she never put a foot wrong; whatever Yu Meng Yu offered, Wang Yue Gu provided a repost. The no.1 seed won seven points in a row and was two games to the good. It was a body blow for the no.3 seed, who earlier in the day had ended the reign of second seed, Sun Bei Bei. Yu Meng Yu recovered to win the third game but at the vital points went the way of Wang Yue Gu, the top seed prevailed.

Success for Singapore and soon after there was more success. Gao Ning proved too consistent, too safe for the explosive Sharath Kamal Achanta. The Indian paddler blazed a trail of destruction in the first and fourth games as a consistent top spin stroke from the backhand was followed by a forehand which was released with awesome power. In particular, the power was very much in evidence as he raced into a 7-0 lead in the fourth game, eventually levelling matters but in the ensuing game it was the reverse scenario. Gao Ning won the first six points, the tide had turned; gradually consistency overcame power.

Sharath Kamal Achanta, who had won gold in the Men’s Singles event at the Commonwealth Championships in Kuala Lumpur in 2004 and two years later the Men’s Singles crown in the table tennis events at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, had to settle for silver. Once again the top prize was in the hands of Gao Ning.

In the Women's Doubles Event, Top seeds, Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu captured gold; they beat second seeds, Sara Yuen/Zhang Mo of Canada in the final, gradually acclimatising to the combination of the two young ladies from the continent of North America. Throughout the doubles event, the long pimpled rubber on the backhand of Sara Yuen’s racket, her blocking combined with a unique short forehand stroke, alien to the purist, had created openings for Zhang Mo. However, gradually the class of the Singaporeans told, for the sixth consecutive Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, the gold medal in the Women’s Doubles event was in the hands of Singapore. It was in the hands of Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu.

However, in the corresponding Men’s Doubles competition it was sorrow. In a match full of thrilling rallies, the Indians, seeded no.2, secured a four games victory from the Top Seeds Gao Ning/Yang Zi. And as in Jaipur two years earlier, a clean sweep of medal titles for Singapore had been prevented. Furthermore, it was the same event that had been their downfall; in 2007 Nigeria’s Monday Merotohun and Segun Toriola had been the villains.

Men’s Singles: Final
Gao Ning (SIN) beat Sharath Kamal Achanta (IND) 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6

Women’s Singles: Final
Wang Yue Gu (SIN) beat Yu Meng Yu (SIN) 11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9

Men’s Doubles: Final
Sharath Kamal Achanta/Subhajit Saha (IND) beat Gao Ning/Yang Zi (SIN) 11-8, 10-12, 13-11, 12-10

Women’s Doubles: Final
Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu (SIN) beat Sara Yuen/Zhang Mo (CAN) 4-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7

Commonwealth Championships - Champions Retain Mixed Doubles Crown
Defending champions, Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu retained their Mixed Doubles title at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow on Sunday 24th May 2009 beating top seeds, Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei in four games at the final hurdle.

Seeded two; Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu won 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10.

The combination of the left handed Yang Zi and the right handed Wang Yue Gu, the classic doubles partnership, proved an irresistible force.

A semi-final place booked one day earlier, they beat India’s Amalraj Aputhraj Anthony and Madhurika Patkar to reserve their place in the gold medal contest, recovering from an opening game deficit to record a four games success.

Meanwhile, at the same stage, Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei defeated Australia’s William Henzell and Miao Miao.

They were dominant, never seriously threatened.

In the Men's Singles event, Top Seed Gao Ning overcame Canada’s Pierre-Luc Hinse and India’s Sourav Chakroborty. He will be facing England's Paul Drinkhall in the Semi-Finals. On the other hand, 2nd Seed Yang Zi was upset by 27 years old Indian Subhajit Saha.

Singaporeans occupied the Top 3 seedings in the Women's Sngles Event. Wang Yue Gu overcame Northern Ireland’s Liu Na and England’s Joanna Parker to book her place in the semi-finals whilst, Sun Bei Bei proved too fast for Naomi Owen of Wales and Beh Lee Wei of Malaysia to reserve her place in the penultimate round. Not to be overshadowed, third seed, Yu Meng Yu, was equally in unforgiving form. She accounted for India’s Poulomi Ghatak in round two and England’s Kelly Sibley at the quarter-final stage. In the semi-finals Wang Yue Gu meets Mouma Das whilst Sun Bei Bei confronts Yu Meng Yu.

In the Men’s Doubles event Gao Ning/Yang Zi defeated Malaysia's Chai Kian Beng/Muhammed Shakirin Ibrahim at the quarter-final stage, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-6. The defending Champion will meet England’s Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight in the semi-finals. However, colleagues Cai Xiao Li/Pang Xue Jie suffered defeat at the hands of second seeds, India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta/Subhajit Saha. They lost 9-11, 7-11, 10-12.

In the Women's Doubles event, Top Seeds, Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu defeated India’s Mouma Das/Poulomi Ghatak in the quarter-finals. They succeeded 7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5. In the semi-finals, Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu meet Miao Miao and Stephanie Xu. England’s fourth seeded partnership of Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley ended the hopes of Singapore’s teenage defensive pairing of Isabelle Li Siyun/Zena Sim Kai Xin. They lost 10-12, 4-11, 4-11.

Commonwealth Championships - Singapore Continue to Dominate in the Singles Events
Singapore dominated the Men's and Women's Team at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow, clinching both gold medals. Yesterday, the players were once again in fine form.

Gao Ning, the No. 1 Seed and Yang Zi seeded no.2, recorded respective wins over England's Danny Reed and Canada's André Ho. Cai Xiao Li continued his good form shown in the team event to beat Canada's Xavier Therien.

In the Women's Singles event, only Isabelle Li suffered defeat; the 14 year old rising defensive star was beaten by the impressive Malaysian, Ng Sock Khim; the one player who had posed a threat to Singapore in the Women's Team event by extending Wang Yue Gu, the full five games distance. Earlier on, Li who is the only female Singaporean to play in the qualifying round, top the group to qualify for the Main Draw.

In the opening round of the Women's Singles competition there were no such troubles for Wang Yue Gu, seeded no.1, she beat Canada's Stephanie Yuen in four straight games. She won 11-5, 11-5, 11-3, 11-5.

Success in style for Wang Yue Gu and that was also the case for Sun Bei Bei (seeded no.2), Yu Meng Yu (seeded no.3) and Sim Kai Xin Zena.

Sen Bei Bei defeated Guernsey's Dawn Morgan, Yu Meng Yu overcame New Zealand's Sara Ho, whilst Zena Sim ended the hopes of New Zealand's Sun Yang. Sun Bei Bei won 11-3, 11-3, 11-2, 11-2, whilst colleagues Yu Meng Yu and Zena Sim succeeded 9-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 and 13-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-3 respectively.

Success for Singapore in both the Men's and Women's Singles events and also in the Mixed Doubles but there was a blip, caused by a determined Indian partnership.

Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei booked their semi-final place without ever being seriously threatened as did Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu. Seeded no.1 Gao Ning/Sun Bei Bei recorded a quarter-final victory over England's Paul Drinkhall/Joanna Parker, whilst Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu, the defending champions and no.2 seeds, also broke English hearts. They beat Darius Knight/Kelly Sibley.

In the semi-finals, Gao Ning/Sun Bei Bei meet Australia's William Henzell/ Miao Miao, the no.3 seeds, who accounted for Malaysia's Muhammed Ibrahim/Beh Lee Wei in the quarter-finals; whilst Yang Zi/Wang Yu Gue meet India's Amalraj Anthony/Madhurika Patkhar.

The Indians proved the surprise package of the event. In round two they defeated fourth seeded, Cai Xiao Li/Yu Meng Yu before ousting compatriot's Sharath Kamal Achanta/Shamini Kumaresan to book their place in the semi-finals and thus be assured of a medal.

The Men's and Women's Doubles Event will also begin today.

Commonwealth Championships - Titles Defended
Represented by the powerful trio of Gao Ning, Yang Zi and Cai Xiao Li; Singapore retained their Men’s Team crown at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow. In so doing they emulated the efforts of their female compatriots some two hours earlier.

At the final hurdle they beat the Indian team of Sharath Kamal Achanta, Sourav Chakroborty and Subhajit Saha by three matches to one. The success in Jaipur, two years earlier in 2007, was the one previous occasion that Singapore had secured gold in the Men’s Team competition. Earlier in the 2nd stage, Singapore beat Canada in devastating style to assure themselves a place in the finals with the trio of Yang Zi, Gao Ning and Cai Xiao Li proving too strong from Pradeeban Peter-Paul, Homatoun Kamkar-Parsi and Xavier Therien.

In the finals. Gao Ning proved the backbone of success; he beat Sourav Chakroborty in the contest which started the fixture and Sharath Kamal Achanta in the duel that brought proceedings to an end. He won both matches in straight games being too fast for his adversaries; his ability to attack quickly over the table was of paramount importance as he sped to victory.

Against Chakroborty he nullified the Indian’s fast forehand whilst in opposition to Achanta he did the same to the powerful forehand of India’s top player. Gao Ning gave a master class and in so doing maintained his unbeaten record to date in the tournament.

Two wins from Gao Ning and one from Cai Xiao Li in a controversial duel against Subhajit Saha. The Indian was faulted three times in the match on his service for not throwing the ball in a sufficiently vertical direction. But the ultra polite, Saha, never complained.

The incidents put poor Cai Xiao Li in the role of the villain but he had done nothing wrong; he too conducted himself magnificently, in the first game informing the umpire that a top spin from Saha had touched the edge of the table when the official believed the ball had flown wide. Victory went the way of Cai Xiao Li, who after a slow start, recovered his rhythm to win in five games.

The one success for India came from Sharath Kamal Achanta in the second match of the contest. He beat Yang Zi in five game in duel that had the crowd on the edges of their seats, especially in the crucial decider. In the vital fifth game, the Indian established a 7-3 lead; it was puzzling as to why the Singaporeans had not called a “Time Out”. However, Yang Zi recovered, he fought; he levelled at 7-all but then lost the next point. The Singapore camp called “Time Out”; it was to no avail, Achanta won three of the next four points and was home and dry.

Alas for India it was their only success; gold was in Singaporean hands.

Commonwealth Championships - 6th Consecutive Crown
Represented by Wang Yue Gu, Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu; Singapore won the Women’s Team title at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow defeating geographical neighbours, Malaysia, by three matches to nil at the final hurdle.

Yu Meng Yu gave Singapore the perfect start by beating Beh Lee Wei in three straight games; after a close first game she accelerated gaining in confidence; her speed too great for the counter attacking skills of the Malaysian and the varying degrees of topspin forcing errors.

A convincing win by Yu Meng Yu but the next duel was somewhat different; it finished in convincing style but it certainly did not start in that fashion.

Ng Sock Khim, who had impressed throughout the first and second stages of the tournament, raced into a 6-0 first game lead against Wang Yue Gu; she was in full flow, her topspin play from both backhand forehand consistent and causing her more experienced adversary great problems.

Wang Yue Gu, usually strong from the backhand, made mistakes; the Malaysian captured the first two games. However, experience told, the errors were eliminated in the next three games, just as Ng Sock Khim had dominated the first two games, so Wang Yue Gu dominated the next three. She took the top seeds into a two matches to nil lead.

Sun Bei Bei, the reigning Women’s Singles champion, was in no mood for charity; she dominated matters from start to finish against the less experienced Chiu Soo Jiin. In straight games she succeeded; once again it was gold for Singapore, for Malaysia, there was the consolation of silver.

May World Ranking - Wang Yue Gu Fall Out of Top 10 Places
In the latest World Ranking published by the ITTF, Wang Yue Gu and Li Jiawei suffered a drop in their World Ranking. Wang Yue Gu, who was upset in the World Championships, got overtaken by Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun and China's Liu Shiwen and is currently ranked 11th. Adding on to the disappointment, Li Jiawei who has been absent in the international arena is also threatened of a Top 10 place. She is currently at the 10th position.

For the rest of the female paddlers, their World Ranking remain the same. Feng Tianwei remain at the 6th place while Sun Bei Bei is at 30. Yu meng Yu is 2 places behind at 32. Singaporean youths Sim Kai Xin Zena and Li Siyun Isabelle are at 317 and 360 respectively.

Singapore Sports Award - Team of the Year Award goes to...
The Women's Table Tennis Team that delivered a Silver Medal at the Beijing Olympics last year was crowned the Team of the Year (event) by the Singapore Sports Award Selection Committee.

However, there were no Sportsman of the Year and Coach of the Year award. Initially, the panel had an debate when it came to the Coach of the Year award. Much of the three-hour meeting at the Singapore Sports Council was spent deliberating if former national table tennis head coach Liu Guodong should be considered. This despite not being nominated by the Singapore Table Tennis Association. Ultimately, he was not in the reckoning, and the committee decided not to give out an award for this category.

In addition to the table tennis fans' woes, 5 times Sportswoman of the Year, Li Jiawei, lose the Sportswoman of the Year title for the 3rd consecutive year. This time, she lost to Bowler Jasmine Yeong-Nathan. The achievements of the women athletes in 2008 made the choice a difficult one for the Singapore Sports Award Selection Committee. In the end, World Champion Jasmine beat Jiawei and swimmer Tao Li to clinch the title.

Our paddlers continue to clinch other prestigious awards. Due to their outstanding performance, Olympic Silver Medalists Li Jiawei, Feng Tianwei and Wang Yue Gu were also given the Meritorious Award (Individual). Gao Ning/Yang Zi, Li Jiawei/Sun Bei Bei and the Men's Team which comprises of Gao Ning, Yang Zi and Cai Xiao Li were also awarded with the Meritorious Award (Event).

Not to be outdone by their seniors, the youth paddlers were also awarded the Meritorious Award (Individual) in the Junior category. They are Yu Meng Yu, Pang Xue Jie and Li Siyun Isabelle.

World Table Tennis Championships - Singapore Return Empty Handed
Singapore might have done their best by reaching the Quarter Finals of 3 events. However, the thought of returning home empty handed still aches many Singaporeans heart.

In the Women's Singles Event, Feng Tianwei lost 4-1 to China's second seed Guo Yue in the last eight of the women's singles.

The Republic was also eliminated in the last eight of the men's and women's doubles. The men's doubles pair of Gao Ning and Yang Zi lost 4-2 to Japan's Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani, while the women's doubles pairing of Feng and Wang Yuegu lost 4-2 to Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana.

But team manager Eddy Tay said the team's overall performance at the World Championship was a positive one. "Overall, I would say it's a positive performance. At past world championships, we were eliminated in very early on. This time, we reached the last eight in three events. Local-born players like (Pang) Xuejie and Zena (Sim) also made it into the main draw."

World Table Tennis Championships - One Step Away from the Podium
Despite suffering in the Mixed Doubles Event yesterday, Gao Ning joined forces with Yang Zi to reach the Quarter Finals of the Men's Doubles Event. Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu also showed determination to overcome their opponents. All they have to do is to defeat their respective adversaries in the Quarter Finals tomorrow and a Medal will be in their pockets.

In a re-match of last year's Beijing Games encounter, Feng came from 2-3 down to beat South Korea's Park Mi Young 4-3 (11-9, 11-7, 5-11, 10-12, 11-13, 11-9, 13-11) in a two-hour marathon. The defensive Park chopped her way back into contention after losing the first two games and there were fears that Feng, ranked sixth in the world, would capitulate under the pressure. Feng will be facing defending Champion Guo Yue in the Quarter Finals.

Gao Ning/Yang Zi add on to the joy. The pair defeated Russians Fedor Kuzmin and Igor Rubstov 4-3 (11-7, 11-9, 14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-13, 11-7). Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu are also one of the 8 pairs that qualified for the Quarter Finals. Their opponents today will be Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun/Tie Yana.

However for Yu Meng Yu, she was the victim. The world No. 33 was beaten in the round of 16 by Kasumi Ishikawa, ranked 66 rungs below her. It was the 16-year-old Japanese player's first victory over Yu in three meetings. Yu lost 2-4 (9-11, 11-9, 2-11, 8-11, 11-9, 9-11) before a partisan crowd. Yu's day was further ruined when she and Sun Beibei were eliminated in the last 16 of the women's doubles. The duo were thrashed 1-4 (7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 6-11, 8-11) by Hong Kong's Lin Ling and Zhang Rui.

On the other hand, high performance manager Eddy Tay is satisfied with the paddlers results. He mentioned that Feng deserves to win after showing mental strength against a very tough opponent, and that Yu has given a good account of herself in Japan, given her relative inexperience.

Will our paddlers return with a medal? The verdict will be out tomorrow.

World Table Tennis Championships - Mixed Doubles Misery
Singapore's biggest medal hope vanishes after both Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu and Gao Ning/Feng Tianwei failed to progress in the Mixed Doubles Event. Sun Bei Bei add on to the list of casualty in the Women's Singles Event. Achieving a medal seems further and further away.

In the Women's Singles Event, Sun Bei Bei lost to Dutch Lady Li Jiao in a gruelling 7 games encounter. Meanwhile Yu Meng Yu was the player to spring the unexpected. She ended the hopes of Austria's Liu Jia, the No. 11th Seed. She will take on Japan's Ishikawa Kasumi. This Japanese young lady caused an upset against colleague Fukuoka Haruna.

Feng Tianwei had a revenge for Sun Bei Bei by ousting out another paddler from Netherlands, Li Jie. She will be facing a tough challenge tomorrow as her opponent is South Korea's Park Mi Young.

Singapore continued their good form in the Men's and Women's Doubles Event. Gao Ning/Yang Zi defeat Belarus' to reach the round of 16. Their opponent will be Russia's Kuzmin Fedor/Rubtsov Igor.

Both Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu and Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu crashed out their opponents with a convincing margin of 4-0 and 4-1 respectively. Feng/Wang will be taking on Poland's Partyka Natalia/Xu Jie, while Sun/Yu will have to face Hong Kong's Lin Ling/Zhang Rui.
