However Pang Xue Jie failed to qualify for the Main Draw after losing out in the Qualification Round. Pang faltered against the more experienced Daniel Artur from Poland. He lost 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.
4 pairs in the Mixed Doubles Event enjoyed success as well. Pang Xue Jie/Sun Bei Bei and Cai Xiao Li/Yu Meng Yu had an easy time against their adversaries. They won with a margin of 4-0 and 4-1 respectively. However Gao Ning/Feng Tianwei as well as Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu were tested by their opponents. They required the full 7 games to cross the hurdle. Yang/Wang's match is one of the more classic matches today. They were behind their opponents 1-3, before they turn the tables around!
Let wish them all the best in their Singles and Doubles Events which will commence tomorrow.

They include Host Nation's 14 year old Koki Niwa, New Zealand's Kevin Wu as well as United States' 12 year old Lily Zhang and 13 year old Ariel Hsing. Not to be outdone, Sports School Students Pang Xue Jie and Li Siyun Isabelle put up an amazing performance on the first day of the competition.

Meanwhile, the defensive skills of Isabelle proved too strong for her opponent to break through. She had an easy time against Fayazian Anna from Ireland.

World Table Tennis Championships - Wang Yue Gu face Singaporean Jinx
The draw for the 2009 Yokohama World Table Tennis Championships was conducted at 1400 hours (1500 hours in Japan Time). Our Singapore paddlers receive a generally well draw.
Gao Ning, Yang Zi and Cai Xiao Li are drawn into the Main Draw directly due to their World Ranking. However, Gao Ning and company may perish in the first few rounds of the event. As allocated by the draw, Gao Ning will be facing China's penhold grip player Xu Xin in the 2nd round, whilst Yang Zi is likely to take on Japan's No. 1 paddler Mizutani Jun. Cai Xiao Li will have to cause an upset in the 1st round before meeting Olympic Gold Medalist and World No. 2 Ma Lin in the 2nd round.
In the Women's Singles Event, Feng Tianwei and Wang Yue Gu are expected to reach the Quarter Finals. Feng will have a smooth sail until the Round of 16, where she is likely to meet South Korean Defender Park Mi Young. If she can repeat the victory in the Beijing Olympic Games, she will be facing China's Guo Yue in the Quarter Finals. However, Wang Yue Gu will have to face Belarus' Pavlovich Viktoria. Wang has to be worried about this lady as she was the one to oust out Feng, Yu Meng Yu and Sun Bei Bei all in one Pro Tour Open. Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu will be striving to achieve their personal best in this competition. Sun finished in the Round of 32 in the previous occasion while Yu is participating in the event for the first time. Without much surprise, Both Sun and Yu should reach the Round of 32. Their opponents in the Round of 32 are Li Jiao from Netherlands and Austrian Liu Jia respectively.
Local youths Pang Xue Jie, Sim Kai Xin Zena and Li Siyun Isabelle will be playing the qualifying stage.
In the Doubles Event, Gao Ning and Yang Zi should not have any problem reaching the Quarter Finals. However, their results will have to depend on the condition of Yang Zi, as he may not have fully recovered. Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu and Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu are likely to succeed to the Quarter Finals as well. Feng/Wang may even win a Bronze Medal if they can overcome Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun/Tie Yana. Sun/Yu will face a more stringent test, as their opponent in the Quarter Finals is South Korea Top Defensive Pair, Kim Kyung Ah/Park Mi Young. Kim/Park is ranked as China' No. 1 Opponent in the Doubles Event.
In addition Cai Xiao Li/Pang Xuejie and Sim Kai Xin Zena/Li Siyun Isabelle will be competing in the Qualification Stage.
The Mixed Doubles Event is another opportunity for our paddlers to clinch medals since China is sending a batch of relatively young and inexperience paddlers to compete. However, many countries have also see it as an opportunity for them, and has increase their training in the Mixed Doubles. Gao Ning/Feng Tianwei is our highest medal hope in this event. Their first opponent is Japanese Teenagers Niwa Koki/Morizono Misaki, and they will only meet China Players in the Quarter Finals. Also, Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu are likely to reach the round of 16 where they will meet 5th Seed, China's Hao Shuai/Chang Chenchen. Both Pang Xue Jie/Sun Bei Bei and Cai Xiao Li/Yu Meng Yu will take on China's Xu Hui/Peng Luyang and Xu Xin/Fan Ying in the round 2nd round.
Although achieving Medal may not be an easy task, but our paddlers will strive their very best to achieve their best results!

Smashing Wedding for Jiawei in Beijing
National paddler weds businessman Li Chao in a lavish ceremony at Beijing Hotel Beijing - Li Jiawei proved she can serve up a wedding as smashing as one of her table tennis volleys here yesterday. As melodramatic music played, smoke swirled, spotlights twirled and cameras flashed, the national paddler sashayed down a short catwalk in a stunning $13,000 gown before 600 guests. On hand were celebrities such as Chinese director Zhao Benshan and Singaporean starlet Chen Meixin, who was Jiawei's bridesmaid. By her side was her husband, Chinese businessman Li Chao, 36. Earlier, he had serenaded his bride with a rendition of Xiao Wei, Taiwanese singer Huang Pinyuan's hit, that called for Jiawei, 27, to 'fly to the sky with me'. The four-hour ceremony was held at the six-star Beijing Hotel, where all feasted on a 13-course banquet. Li Chao appeared rather unnerved at times by the media scrum capturing the couple's every move. But a friend of the groom, who gave her surname as Chen, said Jiawei's glow seemed to spread every time she wowed the crowd with a new costume change. A stunning moment came after the compere proclaimed that 'the angel has descended from heaven'. The silk canopy on a raised platform was opened to reveal the bride dressed in a 40kg bustier gown hand sewn with 38,888 pieces of Swarovski crystals. The four gowns she wore yesterday were specially designed for her and sponsored by Singapore's WhiteLink bridal studios. The festivities began when the couple stepped out of a stretch limousine at about 10.25am - the bride in a flowing white Grecian-styled gown - at the Beijing Hotel entrance, to cheers from a hundred-strong crowd and exploding party poppers. Above the din, a chorus suddenly rang out in Mandarin, but with a Singaporean accent: 'Jiawei, we will always support you!' The bridal couple turned to see officials from the Singapore Table Tennis Association, including its president Ms Lee Bee Wah, who had flown in on Friday to attend the wedding. Both bride and groom broke into laughter. After disappearing into a VIP room for over 30 minutes, Jiawei re-emerged in the rose-festooned hall in her crystal-encrusted gown. The couple then exchanged vows and wedding bands as love songs played. Their romantic words to each other - 'I love you forever'. The menu was definitively Chinese, from the shark's fin soup and jumbo prawns to the signature Beijing duck from the famous Quanjude restaurant. Jiawei said she added the latter to the menu to 'showcase the Beijing specialities to the guests from overseas such as Singapore and Japan'. Another traditional touch was the tea ceremony. Li Chao was teased by the compere for 'immediately pocketing the red packet' he received after respectfully serving tea to Jiawei's father. When it came to his mother- in-law, Li Chao obediently took the red packet and put it in Jiawei's hands, to applause from the audience. Singapore Table Tennis Association's Ms Lee also attracted applause with her speech. 'I'm as excited and happy seeing Jiawei married as if I were seeing my own daughter married,' she said. She also conveyed the congratulations from Jiawei's Singapore teammates who were unable to attend as they are competing in Yokohama, in Japan, tomorrow. The couple apparently have no immediate plans for a honeymoon. Jiawei may remain in Beijing for a few months before returning to Singapore to resume training. Li Chao told the guests: 'We hope to have ai de jing hua (fruit of love) as soon as possible, as Jiawei needs to go back to table tennis training for the London Olympics.' (Source: The Straits Times)

World Table Tennis Championships - Singapore Paddlers to Face More Stringent Competition
China Table Tennis Association has recently amended their final entries to the 2009 World Table Tennis Championships. There are some major changes to the entries made earlier and this implies that our players will be facing tougher challenges ahead. China will be sending the largest contingent of 25 people.
Olympic Gold Medalist Ma Lin, Wang Hao and Wang Liqin will be joined by World Top 10 players Ma Long and Chen Qi as well as Zhang Chao and Xu Xin in the Men's Singles Event. Zhang Chao and Xu Xin may be unfamiliar to most of us, but they can be one of the greatest threat to Gao Ning and Yang Zi. Both Zhang Chao and Xu Xin fought hard for their tickets by clinching an overall 2nd and 3rd position respectively, beating Ma Lin and Wang Liqin, in the selection.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yining will be leading the team for the first time after the retirement of veteran Wang Nan. She will be further supported by Guo Yue, Li Xiaoxia, Guo Yan, Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen and Yao Yan. These 7 players won the Top 7 position in the selection process, and they have every ability to beat even Feng Tianwei and Wang Yue Gu.
China will be trying out new Doubles pairing in the Doubles Event. Olympic Doubles Gold Medalist Chen Qi will no longer partner Ma Lin. Instead, he will be joining hands with another penholder Wang Hao. The other 2 pairings are Ma Long/Xu Xin and Hao Shuai/Zhang Jike. Chances of Gao Ning/Yang Zi winning a medal has greatly decreased.
Zhang Yining will be taking a break from the Doubles Event. China will be represented by World Championships Silver Medalist Guo Yue/Li Xiaoxia, Beijing natives Ding Ning/Guo Yan and the newly paired Cao Zhen/Liu Shiwen. Of which, Cao Zhen/Liu Shiwen is a totally new pairing in the international scene. These pairings already have a advantage in their positioning. Thus Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu and Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu is up for a tough fight.
China has registered a total of 7 pairings in the Mixed Doubles Event. Unlike the previous occasions, none of the renowned players are taking part. They are Hao Shuai/Chang Chenchen, Xu Xin/Fan Ying, Qiu Yike/Li Xiaodan, Zhang Chao/Yao Yan, Xu Hui/Peng Luyang, Li Ping/Cao Zhen and Zhang Jike/Mu Zi. This is the best opportunity to clinch a medal, but Singapore is likely to return empty handed because our best doubles pair Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu might even have to withdraw.
Besides competition from China, other Asian Countries can cause major threats as well. Korea's Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young and Hong Kong's Tie Yana, Jiang Huajun and Lin Ling are no pushovers as well.
Lets wish the Paddlers all the best as they embark on their journey.

SAFRA/STTA Table Tennis Championships 2009 - Chew Justify Seeded Position
Top Seed in both the U18 and U15 Boys' Singles Event, Olympic Youth Paddler Hopeful Chew Zhe Yu Clarence justified his position by clinching the 1st position. Chew's journey to the highest position on the podium was not an easy task. In the U18 event, he defeated his senior Lim Jie Yan in the Finals to clinch the title. In addition, his female counterpart Chau Hai Qing was also crowned the U15 Girls' Singles Champion. Meanwhile the U18 Girls' Singles Title was taken by the more experienced Kwa Hui Qi. The winner for the U12 Boys' and U12 Girls' Singles are Tang Jiawen Cheryl and Yin Jin Yuan.
Things may look joyful for these Youth Olympics Hopefuls. However, the other Youth Olympians to be suffered earlier defeat in the respective group stages. Winner in the U15 Girls' event, Chau faltered against Lim Yi Xuan in the opeing round of the U18 Girls' event. Meanwhile, Lam Teng Si suffered under Chng Rui Min in the Semi Finals. Lam also crash out in the Quarter Finals of the U15 Girls' event.
The proficiency of the overseas training stint has been questioned once again. Against local paddlers of their age group, these Youth Olympians to be do not have a clear advantage. How will they be able to face the strong challenge from the other competitors from other countries?

ETTU Cup - Himoinsa won Women's ETTU Cup, an absolute premiere for Spain
The Ucam Himoinsa Cartagena has made a history by being the first Spanish team to win the title in ETTU Cup. Spaniards halted Polish Forbet Tarnobrzeg in their second attempt to win the final in the Pabellón Municipal de Tenis de Mesa in the Barriada Cuatro Santos. Himoinsa had to reverse first match 2:3 defeat and to overcome risky tactics of coach Zbigniew Necek's. "Trainer Neckek set the dangerous tactics, but this time it did not work for Forbet. He placed Kinga Stefanska to play in first match against Sun Bei Bei so we easily gained the lead", said Himoinsa's trainer Enrique Perez Miras. Polish star Li Qian faced Li Jie in the rerun of European TOP 12 from Dusseldorf. "Luck was not on our side when Li lost first game 12:14. She lost next one, and in the third with the rule of acceleration from 3:7, she managed to reverse to 13:11. Finally Li Qian won the decisive game." Shen Yanfei easily overcame Zhou Xiao moving forward Ucam Himoinsa to 2:1 at the scoreboard. "The most spectacular encounter was the duel Sun Bei Bei vs. Li Qian. Polish girl had impressive start with 2:0 leaving Sun on six, and seven points in first two games. Nevertheless Sun Bei Bei came back and even managed to leave Li on one point in fourth game, but Qian demonstrated why she is the best European player and with a few spectacular points, that get spectators on their feet, finished the duel". It was up to Li Jie to brought Himoinsa to the victory. "LI Jie's play in defense and changes of rhythm in attack was to much for Stefanska," added Perez Miras.

ETTU European Champions League - Kroppach's Nemesis Gave Froschberg a Slice Of Heaven
AG Froschberg is the suprising winner of 2008-2009 Women's European Champions League. Honestly, few people might have gambled on the Austrian team after their 2:3 home defeat. On the other hand, after last year incredible verdict and turning out, Kroppach appeared as appointed to European crown this time, but tonight's match displayed a completely different values on field. "Susi" Liu Jia became the icon of the Austrian triumph playing a perfect match in which she defeated Wu Jiaduo and Wang Yue Gu both with the same 3:1 score. Earlier, Wang had given Kroppach the first point (3:2 against ZHU Hong) and the feeling of an easy task for the Germans. But probably Krisztina Toth close defeat against Li Qianbing was the match's true turning point. Günther Renner, manager AG Froschberg, express his joy after the match: "We are very happy, but we were even with some hope before. I knew that "Susi" is in best shape of her career since eight or nine months and that she is also of a very strong mentality now and can stand such tight situations very well. So I was counting on her two points. Our tactics was it to place Li Qiangbing that she could do the very important third match of the day because she's normally not getting nervous in such situations. And we succeeded with that." Kroppach, very disappointed having been defeated in the final for the second time in a row, had already announced their decision not to participate to international competitions next year. Notwithstanding, Kroppach's coach Dennis Leicher, accepted tonight's verdict with best fair-play: "The best team won and we also gave our best so I have no problem to accept to be only second rather than last year where it was no sporty decision. Froschberg is a worthy Champions League winner, congratulations!" WANG VS ZHU = 3-2: 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 WU VS LIU = 1-3: 11-8, 6-11, 10-12, 10-12 TOTH VS LI = 2-3: 7-11, 12-10, 12-10, 6-11, 9-11 WANG VS LIU = 1-3: 8-11, 11-3, 5-11, 5-11

ETTU European champons League - Wang Yue Gu express in Kroppach
Wang Yue Gu's marvellous performance is one of the most important secrets about the success of FSV Kroppach, as she was able to beat almost her all opponents in this Women's ECL season. The Singaporean, but Chinese born sportswoman, Wang collected eleven winning and only five losing games until now. She played her most difficult matches against Liu Jia (Linz AG Froschberg), as Susi (Liu's nickname) managed to defeat her twice. For the first time Liu beat Wang (FSV Kroppach) in Round 2 at group-stage in Linz and she could repeat her excellent shape and she won in ratio 3-0 in the first final in Austria. At the same time Susi lost vs. Wang in Kroppach in Round 5 and we can find three very memorable and precious victories among Wang's matches, for example Iveta Vacenovska (Linz AG) wasn't able to stop the Wang express in the final in Linz. In the semifinal Wang beat Li Jiao (MFS Heerlen) in both duels, moreover in a thrilling fifth set not only at home in Germany, but also in away in Netherlands. We are looking forward to see the second scene of the final with Wang and the other stars.

ETTU European champons League - Kroppach already savouring triumphal taste
The first Women's European Champions League final, played in Linz, ended with an away match probably disclosing the final verdict in favour of Kroppach. The German club, last season runner-up, achieved an impressive away win against Froschberg. Kroppach surprisingly line-up Krisztina Toth who gave her club a decisive success in the third match against Zhu Hong. Performing "Susi" Liu Ja gave her best to maintain Austrian dreams alive, since she got both points defeating Wu Jiaduo and Wang Yue Gu, even though both German players punished Iveta Vacenovska whose double defeat was a heavy handicap for the Austrians Women's ECL Final 1: Linz AG Froschberg - FSV Kroppach 2-3 LIU Jia - WU Jiaduo 12-10, 11-4, 12-10 VACENOVSKA - WANG Yue Gu 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 7-11 ZHU Hong - TOTH 10-12, 11-4, 5-11, 12-10, 6-11 LIU Jia - WANG Jue Gu 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 VACENOVSKA - WU Jiaduo 9-11, 5-11, 9-11 After the hotly-contested and lucky victory of the preceding year's finalists at Linz's Froschberg, at first glance Kroppach appears to be in a good position for the title match in Europe's top league. However, Kroppach has to secure another win to attain victory. Therefore, an exciting and evenly-matched battle is expected; the player's performance, their lineup, and support from the fans will play a decisive role in this match. Both club leaders share this opinion. "In order to achieve this coveted title, we need another victory. Both teams play at quite the same level and can win; the chances are 50:50," commented Kroppach's Horst Schuechen. A super attractive match is certainly expected, which should attract many fans with such an open match. Every single point will be important and a mental challenge. The match will be played tomorrow (11/4/09).
