World Table Tennis Championships - Local Teenagers representing the Nation for the 1st Time
Singapore will be sending her largest contingent to the upcoming World Individual Table Tennis Championships which will be held in Yokohama, Japan this coming April. For the 1st time, Singapore Sports School students will be donning on National Colours at this prestigious event. Sim Kai Xin Zena, Li Siyun Isabelle and Pang Xue Jie will be joining hands with their higher ranked counterparts to achieve another break through for Singapore. The best our paddlers have done was in 2007 where Li Jia Wei partnered Wang Yue Gu to win the Bronze Medal in the Women's Doubles Event.

Our Men's Singles which will be comprised of Gao Ning, Yang Zi, Cai Xiao Li and Pang Xue Jie. They will be facing strong competition from China, who will be sending the World's Top 3 players Wang Hao, Ma Long and Ma Lin in the Singles Event. They are further supported by Chen Qi and Wang Liqin who are also ranked among the Top 10 in the World. Other notable names to take note of includes Zhang Chao and Xu Xin, also from China, South Korea's Joo Se Hyuk, Germany's Boll Timo and Belarus' Samsonov Vladimir.

Pro Tour Grand Finals Men's Doubles Champion Gao Ning/Yang Zi as well as Cai Xiao Li/Pang Xue Jie will face strong challenge from the Chinese Oppositions as well. The Chinese will be represented by Athens Olympic Doubles Champion Chen Qi/Ma Lin and Wang Hao/Wang Liqin.

Meanwhile the Female Singles will consists of Olympian Feng Tianwei, Wang Yue Gu, Sun Bei Bei, Yu Meng Yu, Sim Kai Xin Zena and Li Siyun Isabelle. Feng Tianwei will be the 5th Seed for the event. The Top 4 Seeds will be occupied by Chinese players, Zhang Yining, Guo Yue, Li Xiaoxia and Guo Yan. In addition, teenage paddlers Ding Ning, Liu Shiwen and Yao Yan are all ready to cause upsets. Li Jia Wei has chosen to withdraw from the competition as it clashes with her wedding date.

In the Women's Doubles Event, SEA Games Women's Doubles Champion Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu will join hands once again. Feng Tianwei/Wang Yue Gu will form another dangerous pair, and Li Siyun Isabelle/Sim Kai Xin Zena will form our 1st female pair made up of defenders only in this event. Compared to our male counterparts, our female paddlers are all right handed (Pang is also a left hander). This has indirectly restricted the positioning of our female paddlers during the match. The Chinese will be sending Zhang Yining/Guo Yue and Ding Ning/Liu Shiwen. Both are made up of left and right handed. Lastly, Guo Yan/Li Xiaoxia will join their colleagues in the Doubles Event. The Koreans can also be a great threat to our Doubles. Kim Kyung Ah will once again partner Park Mi Young. This pair made up of defenders is especially strong since our paddlers are afraid of choppers.

Beside the Women's Singles and Doubles Events, our next most hopeful event will be the Mixed Doubles Event. Our team will be represented by Gao Ning/Feng Tianwei, Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu, Pang Xue Jie/Sun Bei Bei and Cai Xiao Li/Yu Meng Yu. None of the pairs have achieve notable results. The best pair so far will be Yang Zi/Wang Yue Gu. They were crowned the Champions in the 2007 Commonwealth Championships over compatriots Gao Ning/Sun Bei Bei. China will be sending a large contingent of at least 7 pairs, but most of the pairs are made up of lower ranked players. Despite the fact, they cannot be underestimated since they still manage to win the Mixed Doubles title 2 year back.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Singapore bagged 5 Bronze Medals
Our paddlers collected their 5th Bronze Medal in the afternoon, after Sun Bei Bei lost to Pavlovich Viktoria of Belarus. Earlier on, Ma Liang and Yu Meng Yu clinched a Bronze Medal each in the U21 Boys' and Girls' Singles Event respectively. Gao Ning/Yang Zi and Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu were awarded another 2 Bronze Medals in the Doubles Event.

Pavlovich Viktoria proved to be Singaporean's Jinx, having ousted out 3 Singaporean in a row. Seeded no.11, Pavlovich Viktoria, was the player to cause the upset beating Feng Tianwei in the 3rd Round, Yu Meng Yu in the Quarter Finals and Sun Bei Bei in the Semi-Finals. Sun Bei Bei lost 14-12, 11-6, 6-11, 11-2, 11-3.

Looking back at history, it is not the first time this paddler has defeated Sun. She suffered twice, once in the China Open in 2005 and the 2nd time in the European Table Tennis Union Cup. However, against the more experienced Li Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu, she recorded zero victories. Probably, the team still need Li Jiawei and Wang Yue Gu as the pillar.

Enough said about their defeats. Our paddlers will be heading to China for a month long centralised training as they prepare for the World Championships next month.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Sun Bei Bei, Our Only Hope Left
Our female paddlers continued their woes after Feng Tianwei's exit in the 3rd round. Yu Meng Yu became the next victim of the defendsive skills of Belarus' Pavlovich Viktoria. Her staunch defence and the occasional attack caught Yu unexpected. Yu, who has never shown a liking against defensive play, lost in straight games, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7. In addition, 2nd Seed, Wang Yue Gu was also ousted out. She lost to Japanese Hirano Sayaka, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6.

Sun Bei Bei is now the only one left standing. She defeated Germany's Barthel Zhenqi, 11-6, 11-2, 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11, to secure herself a Bronze Medal. She will be aiming to clinch her 2nd Pro Tour Title after the Indian Open in 2007. However, she will have to first get pass Pavlovich Viktoria to reach the Finals. Pavlovich Viktoria has already beaten 2 of our paddlers. In the Finals, she will most likely be meeting China's Li Xiaodan. Li is the black horse for this event.

In the Women's Doubles Event, Wang Yue Gu/Feng Tianwei fall short against Japanese Fujii Hiroko/Ishikawa Kasumi. They lost 8-11, 11-4, 6-11, 7-11, 7-11 in the Quarte Finals. On the other hand, Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu proved that they are great partners. They achieved a Bronze Medal after losing to China's Mu Zi/Li Xiaodan in he Semi Finals.

Our 2nd Medal came from Gao Ning/Yang Zi. They lost to the Japanese pairing in the Semi-Finals and settled for Bronze.

Meanwhile, there were another 2 Bronze Medal won by our youths. Ma Liang and Yu Meng Yu finished Top 4 position in the U21 Bys' and Girls' Event respectively.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Defenders, Singaporean Jinx?
Pavlovich Viktoria of Belarus cause the major upset in round three of the Women's Singles event. In four straight games, seeded no.11, she overcame Feng Tianwei, the no.1 seed, to book her place in the quarter-finals. Pavlovich Viktoria won 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9.

The defeats showed that our paddlers are rather weak against defensive style. Although Feng recorded earlier win against China's Wu Yang and South Korea's Park Mi Young in the Beijing Olympic Games, her victory were not convincing enough. Wu Yang is from China 2nd Team, while the win against Park was by the faintest margin, which can be attributed to abit of luck. Meanwhile Yu Meng Yu suffered 2 times defeat against Japanese Chopper in the Pro Tour Grand Finals last year. Li Jiawei was facing troubles against the World No. 1 defender, South Korea's Kim Kyung Ah as well.

However, there are still reasons why we should celebrate. The other 3 Seeds all progressed. Yu Meng Yu, winner of the Women's Singles event one week earlier at the Indian Open, overcame Hungary's Krisztina Toth, the latter withdrawing from proceedings at the end of the third game when trailing by two games to one. Colleagues Sun Bei Bei and Wang Yue Gu recorded victories against their adversaries as well. Sun Bei Bei overcame Romania's Elizabeta Samara; seeded no.8 she beat the no.14 seed in four straight games. Although Wang emerged victorious but she needed the full seven games to overcome Italy's Nikoleta Stefanova, seeded no.21. Wang Yue Gu won 11-9, 9-11, 14-12, 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6.

Gao Ning added on to the happiness by recording another win against Belarus Chtchetinine Evgueni. He won 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 16-14, 5-11, 11-7.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Success for our Female Paddlers
China's youths were unable to cause any upsets against our paddlers. Top Seed Feng Tianwei defeated Wu Yang 4-1. Similarly, against another Chinese, Yu Meng Yu beat Mu Zi 11-9, 8-11, 15-13, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7. Sun Bei Bei and Wang Yue Gu progressed as well. Sun Bei Bei defeated another defender Pavlovich Veronika, while Wang will ousted out Germany's Bollmeier Nadine.

Meanwhile, Gao Ning, seeded no.8, accounted for Portugal's Tiago Apolonia. He won11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-13, 11-6. On the other hand, Yang Zi lost to Germany's Suss Christian after putting up a tough fight. He lost 11-8, 6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11.

Our Doubles continued to progress. Gao/Yang were tested but managed to overcome Germany's Baum Patrick/Hielscher Lars. They won 11-7, 11-7, 11-13, 10-12, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5. Sun/Yu and Wang/Feng had a much easy time. Sun/Yu beat Belarus's Dubkova Alena/Pavlovich Viktoria while Feng/Wang defeated Pavlovich Veronika/Privalova Alexandra. Both won their opponents 4-1.

Matches will continue today.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Worries Proven to be Uncalled For?
Our Seeded Paddlers continue to advance. Earlier on, there was worries that the Chinese teenagers might cause upsets against our Singapore Paddlers. Unlike their seniors, these youths proved to be of little threats to our paddlers.

In the 1st round of the Men's Singles Event, Yang Zi defeated the 2008 World Junior Team Champion in straight games. Cheng Jingqi fought very hard for every point and all the matches ended very closely. Yang Zi won 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9. Cheng's colleague Yin Hang also faltered against his opponent. Gao Ning faces no problems against his adversary as well.

Similarly, the female paddlers progressed with ease. Top Seed and 2nd Seed, Feng Tianwei and Wang Yue Gu defeated their rival with a convincing margin. Feng won in straight games, while Wang beat Mattenet Audrey, 4-1. Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu joined them after beating host Nation's Solja Amelie and Liu Na respectively.

The Singles matches will continue later with Gao Ning and Yang Zi meeting Monteiro Joaoand and Germany's Suss Christian respectively. Both Feng Tianwei and Yu Meng Yu will take on Chinese opponents. Feng will be facing defender Wu Yang while Yu will be facing Kong Ling Hui's disciple Mu Zi. Sun Bei Bei and Wang Yue Gu will be having a easy time. Sun will play against another defender Pavlovich Veronika. World No. 9, Wang will take on Germany's Bollmeier Nadine. This German has caused an upset against Austrian Li Qiang Bing in the 1st round.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Qualifiers receive poor draws...
The recently crowned Men' Singles Champion Ma Liang receive a poor draw in the qualifying stage of the Men's Singles Event. The chances of other paddlers entering the Main Draw is rather slim as well.

Ma Liang has been drawn into group 38, where he will face Chinese teenager Zheng Peifeng and Konecny Tomas. Zheng Peifeng has every ability to upset Ma Liang. Meanwhile, Cai Xiao Li and Pang Xue Jie will also have to upset the higher ranked opponents to ensure a place in the Main Draw.

Sim Kai Xin Zena was not spared either. She is grouped together with French Grundisch Carole and Kertai Rita from Hungary. Both players are currently ranked higher than her.

Yang Zi received another lousy draw. He will be facing the experienced German Suss Christian in the 2nd round. Gao Ning is expected to reach the Quarter Finals before meeting 2nd Seed Samsonov Vladimir.

Yu Meng Yu suffered the same fate as Yang Zi. She is likely to meet China's Mu Zi in the 2nd Round of the Women's Singles Event. Feng Tianwei will meet the same opponent in the Quarter Finals. 2nd Seeds Wang Yue Gu and Sun Bei Bei will be able to proceed to Semi-Finals with much ease, since her opponents are unlikely to cause them much problems. However, things might not be as cheerful as it look for them. Our paddlers will still have to be on the lookout for the Chinese Qualifiers.

In the Men's Doubles Events, Top Seeds Gao Ning/Yang Zi are likely to repeat their last week's success to clinch the title. Their strongest enemy will 2nd Seeds Germany's Boll Timo/Suss Christian and the 2 Chinese Pairs.

On the other hand, our female paddlers may cause upsets in the Women's Doubles Event. Given the fantastic results achieved by the partnering of Sun Bei Bei/Yu Meng Yu, they will definitely have the ability to capture the title.

ITTF Pro Tour German Open - Top Seeds face Strong Opposition
Thinking of achieving another good result in the German Open? Our paddlers will be facing strong opposition despite China not sending their best players.

Gao Ning, our top male paddler, is the 8th Seed in the competition, while Ma Liang, who won the Men's Singles Title last week had to play the qualification stage. In order to capture a medal, they will have to upset Host Nation's Boll Timo and Belarus's Samsonov Vladimir, who are ranked the Top 10 players and the Top 2 Seeds. In addition, Liu Yanan, Chen Jingqi, Zheng Peifeng and Yin Hang; could also be the players to cause upsets. These four teenagers are representatives of the mighty China. Yang Zi is the 18th Seed, whilst Cai Xiao Li and Pang Xue Jie will have to join Ma Liang in the qualifying stage.

Meanwhile, in the Women's Singles event Feng Tianwei is the no.1 Seed and she will be seeking to continue her run of success on the ITTF Pro Tour where she won the Women's Singles title at the Polish Open in November last year. Seeded no.2 is her compatriot, Wang Yue Gu who won the Women's Singles crown in 2006 at the German Open. Sun Bei Bei and Yu Meng Yu are the 8th and 14th Seeds respectively, whilst Sim Kai Xin Zena will have to compete in the qualifiying stage.

Similarly, our femle paddlers may face strong threats from their Chinese opposition. The star names may be missing but teenagers Li Xiaodan, Mu Zi, Wu Yang and Wang Xuan are most certainly names to note.

Li Xiaodan finished 2008 at no.3 on the ITTF Under 18 Girls' Ranking. More recently, she had caused major upsets in the 1st stage of a China internal competition where she is ranked above notable names like Li Xiaoxia and Guo Yan. Mu Zi, whose personal coach is Kong Linghui, has an impressive haul of titles from World Junior Championships and Wu Yang is a reliable defensive player who has also impressed at World Junior Championships. Wang Xuan, who has been in the Chinese 1st Team due to her unique playing style is also capable of upsetting the Seeds.

It is also unusual to see these Chinese Star in the U21 events. Yu Meng Yu and Ma Liang will the 2nd Seed and 4th Seed respectively in the U21 Girls' and Boys' events. Zena and Xue Jie will have to play in the qualification stage.

Our male doubles Gao Ning and Yang Zi will be the Top Seed in the Men's Doubles. However, none of our female paddlers were Seeded in the Women's Doubles Event because there was a last minute change in the pairing since Captain Li Jiawei is not participating. Sun Bei Bei will partner Yu Meng Yu while Feng Tianwei will be paired with Wang Yue Gu.

The competition will begin tomorrow. Germany has a 7 hours time difference from Singapore.

ITTF Pro Tour Indian Open - Best Performance Ever for our Male Paddlers!
Our Male Paddlers enjoyed their best moments at the Indian Open, clinching all of the Top 4 places in the Men's Singles Event. Four of them entered the arena at the start of proceedings; four of them remained at the conclusion. Yu Meng Yu added on to the happiness as the only Singaporean Paddler in the Semi-Finals of the Women's Singles. All of our Doubles did us proud by qualifying in the Finals.

In the Round of 16, Top Seeded, Gao Ning ended the progress of India’s 15 year old qualifier, Soumyajit Ghosh whilst Yang Zi, seeded no.2, defeated Amalraj Aruputharaj Anthony, also from India. Jiawei's goals: Wedding, baby, Games in that order
NATIONAL paddler Li Jiawei has just weeks to prepare for her April 25 wedding celebrations in Beijing, and until the end of 2010 to deliver a baby - or she has to wait until after the 2012 Olympics before trying again.

The 27-year-old recently expressed her desire to start a family with husband Li Chao, 36, and has received the blessings of Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) president Lee Bee Wah.

And in what is believed to be a first in Singapore sports, the national player and the STTA have agreed on the family-planning process - that the baby must come within 21 months.

The 2010 timeframe is to enable her to recover in time to mount a challenge at the London Games, explained Ms Lee.

In 2011, Jiawei would need to compete frequently on the International Table Tennis Federation Pro Tour circuit to ensure a high world ranking.

The world's top 20 men and women paddlers gained automatic qualification to the singles draw of last year's Beijing Olympics.

Athletes usuallytry to schedule parenthood so that their bundle of joy does not interfere with major competitions.

For instance, British marathon world champion Paula Radcliffe and her husband had planned her pregnancy around her running timetable. She gave birth to a daughter in 2007, and competed at last year's Olympics.

Jiawei told The Straits Times: 'I'd like to get pregnant as soon as possible. But it's up to fate. If it doesn't happen in time, I will still continue to play - that is my promise to the STTA.'

Whether or not motherhood beckons, the world No. 7 has her sights on a second consecutive Olympic medal and has national women's team deputy head coach Jing Junhong as her role model.

Jing was a mother when she reached the women's singles semi-finals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Should Jiawei get pregnant soon, she is likely to miss next year's Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. But with the likes of Feng Tianwei, Wang Yuegu, and Sun Beibei, ranked sixth, eighth and 27th in the world respectively, Ms Lee believes that the women's team has ample strength and depth to cope. The Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC said: 'We want the other players to step up and make the most out of the opportunity when it is given to them.'

The team will already be without Jiawei for next week's German Open and the World Championships next month. She has been given time off to prepare for her wedding, which was originally scheduled for May or June.

Jiawei said it would be better to have it earlier, and confirmed that the change in dates was not an indication that she is already pregnant.

The Lis are expected to arrive at the celebrations in a Mercedes Benz jeep. Their convoy of 10 cars will include a 10m limousine and four Mercedes S600 cars.

Although Jiawei has not been honing her table tennis skills of late, the hundreds of invited guests might see her display a different talent - playing the piano. But it is clear what she is really working on: starting a family.

Asked if she felt pressured to have a baby soon, she said the onus should not be on her alone.

Jiawei added jokingly: 'Li Chao is always so busy. He works till late and sometimes he might be tired.'
