Li Jiawei named flag-bearer for Spore's Olympic contingent in Beijing
SINGAPORE : Table Tennis player Li Jiawei will be Singapore's flag-bearer at the Beijing Olympics Games next month.

Li, who will also lead Singapore's attempt to win an Olympic gold medal, was named flag-bearer at a special ceremony at Plaza Singapura on Thursday evening.

Singapore is sending a 31-strong contingent to the Beijing Olympics, including six disabled athletes for the Paralympics.

This is Singapore's largest contingent to the Olympics in 52 years, and the best prepared, said the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).

SNOC Vice President, Dr Tan Eng Liang, will be the Chef-De-Mission.

Some S$7 million was set aside for a project aimed at helping Singapore win an Olympic medal after 48 years.

"Two years after the Project 0812's introduction, 16 athletes under the programme have qualified for the Games. These athletes can now approach the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with confidence and optimism to challenge for medals, knowing that they have received the best training and preparation for the Games," said Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also president of SNOC.
