Table Tennis Olympian - Yang Zi (Part 2)

Table Tennis Olympian - Yang Zi (Part 1)

Substitute quota set for Olympic table tennis team event
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) announced that the IOC has agreed to set up a substitute quota for the table tennis team event in the Beijing Olympic Games. That is to say, each team has a substitute besides three registered players.

According to IOC's regulations, when a table tennis player is unexpectedly injured and is unable to continue competing in the Games, the substitute can participate in the event after the substitution application is approved. The replaced player is not allowed back in the game, no matter how short the recovery period.

The substitute quota generally applies to the team event. It was not needed in table tennis events in previous Olympics because only singles and doubles events were established; however, as the Beijing Olympic Games has set up a team event for the first time, the ITTF ultimately received the IOC's approval of establishing a substitute quota, explained Yao Xhenxu, chairman of ITTF Technical Committee.

The team event substitute player cannot substitute an injured player who has qualified for the singles event, added Yao.

Selection headache for Singapore
Sun presses claim for Olympic team place after she and Li win S'pore Open doubles

A HISTORIC win has resulted in a mighty headache for national table tennis coach Liu Guodong.
Backed by a 1,000-strong crowd at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall yesterday, Li Jiawei and Sun Beibei ensured that Singapore ended the TMS Singapore Open with at least one title.

They beat South Korea's Lee Eun Hee and Moon Hyun Jung 11-8, 12-10, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6 in the women's doubles final.

It marked the biggest win for Singapore since it started hosting the biennial International Table Tennis Federation Pro Tour event in 2004.

Previous podium finishes came only in the Under-21 category.

But the victory has given Liu a selection poser ahead of the Olympic Games in August.

With Singapore's team for Beijing yet to be confirmed, Sun has boosted her chances of making the three-player line-up.

The result, coupled with the recent poor form of Li and her other partner Wang Yuegu in doubles - which will account for one tie in the new Olympic team format - has given Sun a glimmer of hope.

Liu said: 'If Jiawei and Beibei hadn't done well in this tournament, I would have given up on the idea of having Beibei in the team.

'But, after this win, it's a different story.'

At last month's China and Japan Opens, teams were given the opportunity to adapt to the new Olympic team format - four singles and a doubles.

Li and Wang paired up on three occasions under the new format.

They lost all their ties, including an 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12 defeat by Germany's Elke Schall and Barthel, ranked 48th and 92nd in the world.

Before those tournaments, Li and Sun were doubles runners-up at the Brazil and Chile Opens.

While recent form suggests that Sun and Li are a strong partnership, the former is ranked 18th in the world in the singles, behind Li (No6), Wang (No7) and Feng Tianwei (No9).

Moreover, Sun is the only one of the four who failed to qualify for the Olympic singles draw.

Liu explained: 'In terms of doubles, Jiawei and Beibei are a better pair because they share a good chemistry.

'But Yuegu is a stronger singles player than Beibei.'

The furthest Sun progressed in singles in her last five Pro Tour events was a place in the quarter-finals of the Chile Open.

At the Singapore Open, she lost in the first round to world No67 Sandra Paovic of Croatia.

Wang already has a Pro Tour singles title to her name this year.

She won the Brazil Open in April.

Liu said: 'My preference would be for us to have an internal competition to decide who should be in our Olympic team. But the final decision does not lie with me.'

The Singapore Table Tennis Association will nominate the Olympic team. The line-up will be finalised later this month with the approval of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

The Singapore team, including Sun and Wang, will leave on Thursday for Japan.

They will undergo a two-month centralised training stint in Osaka.

It could be Paey Fern's farewell

Likely last S'pore Open for Tan, 34, who's still nervous in front of home fans

SINCE 1990, paddler Tan Paey Fern has been a permanent fixture in the national table tennis squad.

Yet, despite 18 years, she has yet to overcome pre-match jitters when playing before a home crowd.

Come next week's TMS Singapore Open at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall, the 34-year-old hopes to get rid of the butterflies from her tummy.

Said Tan: 'Maybe I'm afraid that I can't play well here. I want to do well in front of our supporters, so I give myself added pressure.

'The world No 99 is desperate to do well in the Singapore Open, which is also an International Table Tennis Federation Pro Tour event, for another reason - it might be her last.

But it will be no easy task, as the world's top 10 men and women paddlers will be in town.

The June 4-8 Singapore Open is the final Pro Tour event before the Olympics. It offers players the last chance to gain vital ranking points, which will determine their seeding at the Beijing Games in August.

Tan, who is considering retirement, said: 'These days, I cherish every single competition, more so than before.'

If anything, the mental and physical exertions of the game are beginning to take a toll on the defensive player.

She explained: 'Nowadays, my body takes a longer time to recover. I can feel it.

The 2004 Olympian, who has tasted success at the South-east Asia, Commonwealth and Asian Games, is planning to go into coaching when she hangs up her bat.

As hosts, Singapore will field 36 players. While the likes of world No 6 Li Jiawei, world No 7 Wang Yuegu and world No 9 Feng Tianwei will spearhead the Republic's charge, about half of the contingent are young local talents.

Among them are Jenn Lim, 18, and Zena Sim, 17.

Jenn, who has been training full-time since the start of the year, said: 'It would be good if we can upset some of the more prominent players.

Zena added: 'Being able to play with the pros will prepare us for other major competitions in the future.'
