ITTF Pro Tour Brazil Open - Li Jia Wei Repeats Asian Cup Performances to Beat Yuka Ishigaki
Singapore’s Li Jia Wei beat Japan’s Yuka Ishigaki in four straight games to reach the final of the Women’s Singles event at the Brazil Open in Belo Horizonte on Sunday 20th April 2008.

Quite simply she knew how to play a defender.

Reversed rubber on the backhand, short pimples on the forehand, Li Jia Wei was the model of consistency; she made very few errors to success 11-6, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9.

It was the third time in a world ranking event that the pair had met and the result was the same as the duels that had gone before. It was victory for the attacker.

Previous Meetings
The two previous meeting had been in November 2007 at Hanoi Television Asian Cup tournament in Vietnam when they had met in both the first and second stage of proceedings. In the first stage Li Jia Wei won in straight games, in the play-off matches for positions five to eight she succeeded in four straight games.

Two Further Casualties
The first two games saw Li Jia Wei totally dominant; Li Jia Wei was relentless, the Japanese defender was left clutching at straws and never seriously threatened the number two seed.

Third Game
However, in the third game the two were level at 3-all, Li Jia Wei then established a 9-5 lead; the next two points went to Yuka Ishigaki, Singapore coach Liu Guodong called “Time Out”.

It was a crisis of quite miniscule proportions.

Long points ensued, with Li Jia Wei moving ahead 10-8 to secure game point; the opportunity was present. Yuka Ishigaki made an unforced error and Li Jia Wei was one game away from the final.Place ReservedLi Jia Wei continued to be the model of consistency, she was confident, Yuka Ishigaki fought but when it counted Li Jia Wei held the aces and a place in the final was secured.

Stepping Stone
It was for Yuka Ishigaki defeat but great credit and a major stepping stone in her career; a place in the semi-finals for the eighteen year old qualifier was a fine effort.

ITTF Pro Tour Brazil Open - Wang Yue Gu Beats Wang Chen to Reach Women’s Singles Final
Top seed Wang Yue Gu from Singapore beat Wang Chen of the United States in the first semi-final of the Women’s Singles event at the Brail Open in Belo Horizonte on Sunday 20th April 2008 to book her place in the gold medal contest.

Wang Yue Gu won 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.

It was the first time that Singapore’s Wang Yue Gu and Wang Chen of the United States had met in a world ranking event; a fact that may seem somewhat surprising as both are now experienced players on the international scene and both hail from China.

However, they are from different generations of Chinese players. In some respects they are similar; both use reversed rubber on the forehand, short pimples on the backhand.

Better Start
However, Wang Yue Gu made the better start in the opening game, staying close to the table she attacked quickly with the backhand; she established an 8-4 lead. It was a lead that proved to be decisive. She won the opening game 11-6.

Second Game
The high thrown forehand service by Wang Chen was very much in evidence in the second game; a sort service, the ball returned to the backhand and then a fast attack from the backhand to the Wang Yue Gu forehand brought success.

Wang Chen went ahead 8-5 but with fast attacks after the service, Wang Yue Gu levelled at 8-all.

Short rallied had been the order of the game but from parity it was the opposite scenario. Fast counter topspin rallies ensued with Wang Yue’s slightly faster attacks clinching the verdict.

She won the second game 11-9.

Same Pattern
The third game very much followed the pattern of the two that had gone before with Wang Yue Gu winning the crucial points.

The scores were level at 7-all but then the Singaporean accelerated; she clinched the next three points eventually winning the game 11-8.

She was two games to the good.

Confidence
Wang Yue Gu was now confident, she attacked quickly in the fourth game, she gave Wang Chen little time to react.

The Singaporean established a 9-7 lead. Wang Chen levelled at 9-all but the advantage was with Wang Yue Gu, she had the next two services.

She took full advantage, she succeeded on both points to win the game 11-9 and book her place in the final.

Li wants mediation
THE spat between badminton star Ronald Susilo and table tennis queen Li Jiawei could be settled without going to court.

On Sunday, it was reported in the Sunday Times that Susilo was considering legal action against his ex-fiancee Li after she allegedly ignored his attempts to contact her over the financial situation of the car and condominium purchased when they were a couple. It provoked an angry outburst from Li, who accused Susilo of trying to wreck her preparations for August's Olympic Games.

But speaking at her lawyer's office in Chinatown Point last night, Li is now prepared to resolve the matter amicably.

Reading from a statement, she said: "I had never expected that a private matter such as a personal relationship between two people would be splashed all over the nation's newspapers.

"… In view of the upcoming Olympics and so as not to adversely affect both our preparations and training, my lawyers have advised (me) and I'm prepared to have a mutually agreed third party mediate in our disagreement in private and in-confidence."

She added: "In the event that my offer of mediation is not taken up and legal action is resorted to and unreasonable demands are made, I will contest the suit vigorously and let the truth decide who has been right and wrong."

Li, 26, revealed she had one or two persons in mind as mediator, but it would be subject to Susilo's approval.

When contacted last night, Susilo indicated he is agreeable to mediation. He said: "I welcome and accept her idea of mediation and an out-of-court settlement to amicably resolve the issue, but she has to make the first move and call me.

"I find it very odd that such a private matter has to be conveyed through the media. Why can't she contact me in private?"

Both Susilo and Li have qualified for the Olympics and are in the final stages of their preparations. When asked if she would still consider meeting Susilo to resolve the matter without a mediator, Li said: "It's unlikely. I prefer mediation."

The pair became an item at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and Susilo proposed to Li in August 2004. That year, they bought a car — an $80,000 Honda Civic — and an apartment in Kembangan worth more than $600,000.

Li reportedly paid a six-figure deposit for the apartment, with the rest covered by a bank loan. The car was registered in her name even though she does not drive.

When they split up in January, both agreed to split the money they got from the sale of the car, now worth about $40,000. Susilo, 28, is also believed to be claiming between $50,000 to $100,000 for renovation costs on the apartment.

Addressing the weekend reports, Li said: "I wish to set the record straight without going into personal details. Ronald knows the reason which triggered the break-up. As for the car and condominium, my views differ greatly from that as reported in the Sunday Times. These two items have been highlighted out of the context of the wider relationship as a whole.

"We both know full well who has been generous with regard to money issues and gifts, and to why the car and condominium apartment were purchased in my name alone, especially since I don't drive."
