Asian Championships - Women's Team Awarded Silver!
China won the Women's Team title on home soil at the China Mobile Asian Table Tennis Championships in Yangzhou on Wednesday 19th September 2007 to regain the title they had surrendered two years earlier when the tournament was held in the Korean city of Jeju. At the final hurdle China beat Singapore by three matches to nil but the margin of victory was much closer than the score line suggests. The Singaporean trio of Li Jia Wei, Sun Bei Bei and Wang Yue Gu gave spirited resistance against star studded team of Zhang Yining, Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia.

Facing a team that included the reigning Olympic champion and the reigning World champion is for anyone a daunting task; nevertheless, the Singaporeans were not overawed and they gave their illustrious adversaries nervous moments in a fixture that last some two and a quarter hours.

Li Jia Wei, who had suffered illness earlier in the year forcing her to withdraw from the Liebherr Chile Open in April and a player, who had not enjoyed the best of form on the ITTF Pro Tour until she won the Women's Singles event at the Chinese Taipei Open in August, gave a splendid performance. Clearly her confidence had received a major boost after beating Haruna Fukuoka in the semi-final duel against Japan, a player against whom she has lost time and again.

In opposition to Guo Yue she tested the most successful player of 2007 to the limit; only in the fifth game was Guo Yue able to really assert her authority on proceedings, her fast forehand topspin wide to the Li Jia Wei forehand proving the telling factor.

Next on court came Sun Bei Bei for Singapore and Zhang Yining for China. In similar vein to Li Jia Wei, Sun Bei Bei gave a splendid performance; she brought the best out of Zhang Yining. The reigning Olympic champion duly responded, she won the crucial points, her backhand being as solid and reliable as ever; her forehand topspin as devastating as ever.

Two-nil ahead for China the next two protagonists were Li Xiaoxia for China and Wang Yue Gu for Singapore. It was contest that kept the crowd captivated as Li Xiaoxia executed topspin strokes from both backhand and forehand in the style of Zhang Yining and Wang Yue Gu attacked with her backhand and fast forehand in the style of Deng Yaping.

The duel went the full five games distance and it seemed that the verdict was going the way of Wang Yue Gu; in the fifth and deciding game she led Li Xiaoxia 8-4; the point that took her to that stage being a rally of the highest order with the final cross court forehand executed by Wang Yue Gu, off balance, leaving Li Xiaoxia dumbstruck.

However, from that moment onwards, Li Xiaoxia was 'Miss Perfection' she never made an error, her topspin play was immaculate. She won seven consecutive points to win the match and clinch gold for China. There was a broad smile on her face but the biggest smile was on the face of Zhang Yining; she was preparing to play Li Jia Wei in the vital fourth match; it was a match that never took place.

"I thought the Singapore team played very well, we appreciate the efforts that they made? said Shi Zhihao, the Chinese Nation Team Women's Coach. "The Chinese players are of a slightly higher level but Singapore did their best, it was a very good effort on their behalf. Most certainly it was a very fine effort and both Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia in particular experienced problems. The styles of their opponents caused them problems" continued Shi Zhihao. "Nevertheless, they both won and of course it is good to have the title back!" Certainly, the coach was pleased and he was pleased with the efforts of Li Xiaoxia.

Guo Yue beat Li Jia Wei 11-6, 7-11, 15-13, 10-12, 11-4, Zhang Yining overcame Sun Bei Bei 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4 whilst Li Xiaoxia succeeded against Wang Yue Gu 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8.

ASIAN Championship 2007 - Women's Team reach Finals!
China and Singapore reached the final of the Women's Team event at the Asian Championships in Yangzhou following impressive semi-final victories on Tuesday 18th September 2007. Both fixtures were resolved by the margin of three matches to nil; the victors were clearly focused on the task in hand and duly succeeded. The reigning World champions, China, overcame defending Asian champions Hong Kong, whilst Singapore ended the hopes of Japan.

Victory for was to be somewhat expected but the impressive manner in which Singapore defeated Japan was not to be expected.Wang Yue Gu set the tone; she had no problems with the fast backhand attacks of Ai Fukuhara and won in quick-fire style.

Similarly, in the next match, there was a quick end to matters. Li Jia Wei beat Haruna Fukuoka, a player against whom she has experienced dreadful problems in the past. Haruna Fukuoka started as favourite but play tactically astute Li Jia Wei controlled proceeding from start to finish.Controlled topspins to the backhand, the side of the racket which has long pimples and to the forehand fast attacks; the plan worked to perfection.

Singapore in the driving seat Sun Bei Bei ended matters by beating Sayaka Hirano, the Japanese player offered the most resistance all but it was not to beThe two had met at the Liebherr Chile Open earlier in the year when Sayaka Hirano had won en route to her runners up spot. In Yangzhou, Sun Bei Bei extracted revenge.

Wang Yue Gu beat Ai Fukuhara 11-1, 11-3, 11-4, Li Jia Wei overcame Haruna Fukuoka 11-4, 11-6, 11-3 and Sun Bei Bei defeated Sayaka Hirano 11-6, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7.

Asian Championship 2007 - Women's Team reached Semi-Finals
Singapore succeeded in the closest of the Women's Team quarter-final contests to book their place in the semi-final stage at the Asian Championships in Yangzhou, China on Tuesday 18th September 2007. In a gruelling contest they prevailed by three matches to two against Korea with Wang Yue Gu being the backbone of success. She beat both Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young with the one further win coming from Sun Bei Bei. In the third match of the proceedings she defeated Kwak Bang Bang.
Success for the Commonwealth champions was hard fought with Korea fielding two of the very best defensive players in the world, Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young. Both beat Li Jia Wei.

"Li Jia Wei has not been well and she is recovering from illness" explained Singapore coach Liu Guozheng. Yesterday she wasn't comfortable when she played and she didn't play to her level; however, we must take into account that we played China, the best in the world. Playing China is difficult for anyone and for Li Jia Wei, who originates from Beijing, very difficult. She won the Women抯 Singles event at the recent Chinese Taipei Open but, other than that result, she has not enjoyed the best of fortunes in 2007. "She gave her best but she wasn't quite herself today" continued Liu Guodong. She had to play two defenders today and she tends to let them dictate the play rather than dictating the play herself.

However, for Wang Yue Gu, who also faced the two defenders it was a different tale. "Wang Yue Gu dictates the play against defenders, that is the difference between her and Li Jia Wei" explained Liu Guodong. "Today I thought that Wang Yue Gu was very good. Wang Yue Gu has a particularly strong backhand, the side of the racket on which she uses short pimples. She played cleverly today, intelligently" continued Liu Guodong. "She was patient, she changed the direction of the play well and the amount of spin she put on the ball; tactically she was excellent. Start and Finish" Liu Guodong had every right to be pleased with Wang Yue Gu, she gave Singapore a splendid start by beating Kim Kyung Ah in three straight games and she concluded matters by doing the same against Park Mi Yong. The two wins by Wang Yue Gu were absolutely vital and so was the success of Sun Bei Bei, playing in the number three position.

"Sun Bei Bei was quite good today" said Liu Guodong. "Earlier in the year she had some very good results on the ITTF Pro Tour and today she did well. She had to play with the scores level and her win over Kwak Bang Bang was achieved in impressive style. She won in three straight games. 揗entally Sun Bei Bei was good today" explained Liu Guodong. She was well prepared and thorough in her play.
