17th Commonwealth Championships - Results!!!

Singapore almost make a clean sweep of Gold Medals at the 17th Commonwealth Championships in Jaipur, India. 2nd Seed Sun Bei Bei currently ranked 17th in the world defeated Top Seed Wang Yue Gu who is currently ranked 8th in the world. Top Seed Gao Ning beat 2nd Seed Yang Zi to win the Men's Singles Crown. However, the pair made up of the Men's Singles Champion, Gao Ning and Yang Zi lost to Monday Merotohun & Kazeem Nosiru (NGR) and could only settle for a Silver. Following are the results.

17th Commonwealth Championships - Mixed Doubles Champions!

Singapore continued their dominance of proceedings at the Commonwealth Championships in Jaipur, India. Singapore provided both pairs in the Mixed Doubles final. Earlier in the proceedings Singapore had won both the Men’s and Women’s Team events; in the guise of Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu they continued that success by winning Mixed Doubles Gold. In the final Top Seeds Yang Zi and Wang Yue Gu beat campatriot 2nd Seed Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei in straight games. They won 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.

Semi Finals
Gao Ning & Sun Bei Bei showed their class with a semi-final success over colleagues Cai Xiao Li and Tan Paey Fern. They won 11-8, 11-5, 11-8.

17th Commonwealth Championships - Women's Singles & Doubles

The Women's Singles did not enjoy as much success compared to the Men's Singles. Top Seed Wang Yue Gu beat Chiu Soo Jin (MAS) 4-1, whilst 2nd Seed Sun Bei Bei beat Kaffo Bose (NGR) 4-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6). However, Tan Paey Fern were unable to overcome her opponent. She lost with a small margin of 4-3 to Cecilia Offiong (NGR).

Despite suffering defeats in the Singles Event, the pair made up of Tan Paey Fern and Tan Hui Min managed to beat Chiu Soo Jin & Chen Lian Fang (MAS) in straight games, before losing to Canada's Zhang Mo and Yuen Sara with the score of 3-1. Top Seed Sun Bei Bei & Wang Yue Gu managed to overcome Host Nation's Patkar Madhurika & Prabhu Mamta in straight games.

17th Commonwealth Championships - Updates (3/6/07)

In the Men's & Women's Singles Qualifying Round, both Ho Jun Yi & Tan Hui Min suffered defeats. Ho Jun Yi first lost to Yarnall Tim (ENG) with the score of 0-3, then he suffered in the hands of Graham Peter (IRL) with the score of 3-1. Tan Hui Min lost to host Nation, India's Paul Mousumi with the score of 3-1, then she lost to Mohamed Mueena (MDV) with a close margin of 3-2.

Success in the Main Draw for the Men's Singles
However, players who qualified for the Main Draw enjoyed success. Top Seed Gao Ning defeated Qureshi Asim (PAK) with the score of 4 - 1. 2nd Seed Yang Zi did well too by overcoming Host Nation, India's Jubin Kumar with a score of 4-3. Cai Xiao Li did as well by beating Nandi Anirban (IND) with the same margin.

Success in the Mixed Doubles
The Singaporeans did well in the Mixed Doubles Event as well. Top Seed Yang Zi & Wang Yue Gu defeated Nandi Anirban & Chakraborty Kasturi(IND) with the score of 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-7). 2nd Seed Gao Ning & Sun Bei Bei overcame Aruputharaj Anthony Amalraj & Vijay Vishaka (IND) with a score of 3-2 (10-12,11-6,11-4,7-11,11-8). Cai Xiao Li & defender Tan Paey Fern Sharon also overcame India's Das Ranbir & Swarna Jayakumar in straight games. They won 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-6).

17th Commonwealth Campionships - Singapore Achieve 2 GOLDS!

Singapore managed to cliched both the Men's Team & the Women's Team Title by defeating their opponent, India & our neighbour Malaysia respectively.

Men's Team
Yang Zi overcame A Sharath Kamal with the score of 3-2 in the first game, which gave Singapore the confidence needed for the rest of the 2 games. Gao Ning overcame Soumyadeep Roy in straight games, whilst the most experienced Cai Xiao Li beat Subhajit Saha with the score of 3-2.

Women's Team
The Women's Team did not face as much success. 1st game played by Sun Bei Bei who is currently ranked 17th in the World Ranking lost to Lee Wei Beh with the score of 2-3. However, Wang Yue Gu manged to turn the tables around by beating Ng Sock Khim, despite extending to the full 5 games. She won with a score of 3-2. Tan Paey Fern continued the good form by overcoming Soo Jin Chiu with the score of 3-1. Wang Yue Gu then played the 4th game which she defeated Lee Wei Beh with the score of 3-1.

Once again, both the Men's & Women's Team did exceptionally well today. The Men's Team beat England with the score of 3-0 before overcoming Scotland in the last game with the same margin, while the Women's Team defeated Nigeria before winning Canada with the same score of 3-0!
